About The Great Saltpetre Cave Part 2
In 1860, the cave property was purchased by Calloway Mullins for $50 and a rifle. The cave was rarely used, except for social gatherings. Around 1939, the south entrance tract was purchased by John Lair and Dr. Walker Owens. The great room of the cave (the Echo Auditorium ) was used to host the Renfro Valley Barn Dances, with an opening night broadcast made from the cave on CBS radio. Over the years, the caves owners made several attempts to open it for commercial tours. In 1989, the Great Saltpeter Cave was purchased by a private historical foundation, and is currently managed by the Greater Cincinnati Grotto. Check Out the Greater Cincinnati Grotto's Website
